Color Tolerance Was Agreed in Words
“Commercial match” with no ΔE, no illuminant, and no physical standard on file. Every subsequent argument is unwinnable by both sides.
An industry whose specifications are almost entirely test methods, and whose hardest quality problem — color — is the one people assume is subjective.
The Shape of It
It is not subjective. Instrumented color measurement in L*a*b* space, with an agreed tolerance and an agreed illuminant, turns an argument between a buyer and a mill into a number either side can verify.
Getting that agreement written down before production is the single highest-leverage hour in a textile program. Everything downstream — the rejection, the re-dye, the chargeback, the relationship — follows from whether it happened.
What Applies
The working set, not an exhaustive register. Each row prints the body that issues it, so nothing here depends on the color of the rule beside it. Customer-specific requirements sit on top of all of it and are frequently where the real work is.
Colorfastness and Performance. To crocking, light, laundering, and perspiration; plus dimensional stability. Always cite the year.
Color Fastness. The international counterpart to AATCC, and rarely numerically identical to it.
Instrumented Color. Tolerance set as ΔE against an agreed standard and illuminant, not against a memory of last season.
Physical Properties. Tensile, tear, bursting strength, and abrasion resistance.
Flammability of Clothing Textiles. Class 1, 2 or 3, and the records that prove which one this fabric is.
Children's Sleepwear Flammability. Separate limits by size range, and separate testing for each.
Defense Textile Procurement. Method by method, with first-article inspection against each one named.
Restricted Substances. Contractual rather than statutory — and in practice audited harder than either.

In Practice
Not statistics — QES's own reading of where these systems are most often found short, from thirty years of building and auditing them.
“Commercial match” with no ΔE, no illuminant, and no physical standard on file. Every subsequent argument is unwinnable by both sides.
AATCC 8 with no year, so the buyer and the mill are running different revisions and reporting different numbers in good faith.
The clause is signed at contract. No sample has ever been sent to a laboratory to see whether it is true.
A Real-World Case
lululemon’s 2013 Luon recall is a textile lesson in specifying the property the customer actually tests.

Where to Start
A fixed-price gap assessment — two days on your floor and in your files, from $4,200 — produces a clause-by-clause table: what you have, what the standard in your column actually requires, what is missing, and what has to be written — with an owner and a date against each line. You keep the findings whether or not you engage further.
On This Page. The standards listed are the working set an auditor is most likely to open, not an exhaustive register. Dated statements are sourced on the research page. The experience described is drawn from Marcia Weeden's employment record and is available in full on her résumé. Canceled military specifications are marked as canceled where they are still cited in contract flowdowns. Checked October 24, 2026.
